Digital Radiography

With the advances in computer aided dentistry, we now provide our patients the latest diagnostic imaging, also known as Digital Radiography (x-rays). Instead of biting down on dental film, a digital x-ray uses a wireless sensor. Where it used to take 4-6 minutes to process a regular dental x-ray, it now takes less than 30 seconds to produce the image. Since digital x-rays are processed by the computer, they are environmentally friendly – no chemicals or waste.

The Dentist and patient can watch the images come up on the computer screen seconds after the sensor is inserted into their mouth. This allows for better education and understanding for our patients, resulting in greater confidence in treatment. Digital x-rays have the ability to be computer enhanced and magnified.

A concern to many of our patients is the amount of radiation they are exposed to when getting their x-rays. By using digital radiography, the patient exposure is reduced by 90%. Thus, providing better protection to our patients and staff.

Early Orthodontic (Two Phase) Treatment

Phase One (An ideal first step!)
Functional Appliances - Ages 5 to 12

Early treatment should be initiated for:

  • Habits such as tongue thrusting and thumb sucking

  • A constricted airway due to swollen adenoids or tonsils

  • Mouth breathing or snoring problems

  • A bad bite

  • Bone problems (i.e. narrow or underdeveloped jaws)

Phase Two
Braces - Ages 12 to 14

  • Teeth are straightened with braces

  • Braces usually take about a 1 1/2 to 2 years

  • Teeth are whitened

Facts: Early Treatment is Key!

Facial Development
Seventy-five percent of 12-year-olds need orthodontic treatment.  Yet 90% of a child's face has already developed!  By guiding facial development earlier, through the use of functional appliances, 80% of the treatment can be corrected before the adult teeth are present!

Cooperation
Younger children between the ages of 8 and 11 are often much more cooperative than children of ages 12 to 14.

Shorter Treatment Time
Another advantage of early Phase One treatment is that children will need to wear fixed braces on their adult teeth for less time.

To Correct Underdeveloped Jaws
Almost 50% of children who need orthodontic treatment due to a bad bite have underdeveloped lower jaws.  Functional appliances can reposition the lower jaw forward, improve the child's profile and correct the bite problem - within 7 to 9 months!  See what a difference functional appliances made to this young girl's profile!
